groundSwell Designs, LLC,is the recipient of the 2016 Landscape Design Award of Merit by the Perennial Plant Association (PPA), headquartered in Hilliard, OH. groundSwell’s project entitled Namcook: A Breezy, Coastal Summer Cottage (an estate located in Narragansett, RI) was recognized by PPA judges for outstanding design and implementation in the Residential Design Class.
“We are quite honored to have our work acknowledged by such an esteemed group,” said Shawn S. Mayers, principal of groundSwell Designs. “With windswept views of Narragansett Bay, herds of grazing deer, poor soils, blazing sun, invasive species – even wild turkeys – the site, albeit spectacular, was indeed a horticultural challenge. It is quite rewarding to have our vision translated into an award winning garden,” she added.
According to the PPA, the organization recognizes design projects from across the US that are “exemplary in use of herbaceous perennials to help create balanced and beautiful landscapes.”At Namcook, PPA judges commented on the garden's "lovely design elements," and particularly noted the "perfect" selection of plants for summer bloom, patterned walkways and drifts along the stone wall. Mayers said that the English cottage architecture of the historic home was the inspiration for the landscape with a “New American” twist: a profusion of color and texture, utilizing planted drifts of predominantly native plant materials rather than fussy, high maintenance flowers. “With all the challenges that this site presented,” said Mayers, “we had to focus on tough plants, arranged creatively, that are well adapted to the rigors of the coastal climate.”
